Parliament witnessed disruptions as the opposition protested during the monsoon session’s 18th day. The focus of the protests was the Bihar SIR (Special Intensive Revision), leading to chaos in the Lok Sabha. Despite the unrest, a discussion was initiated at 2 PM concerning the historic space mission of Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhansu Shukla. The opposition’s disruptions persisted, forcing the Lok Sabha to adjourn until August 19th. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh condemned the opposition’s actions. He stated in a social media post that the opposition’s behavior during the special discussion on Group Captain Shubhansu Shukla’s journey to and return from the International Space Station (ISS) was deeply regrettable. The discussion’s core theme was India’s space program and its contribution to a developed India by 2047, highlighting national accomplishments, the nation’s pride, and future scientific and national security opportunities. Singh criticized the opposition’s obstruction, labeling their conduct as highly disappointing. He noted that the opposition could have offered constructive criticism and suggestions regarding India’s space program by participating in the discussion. Singh emphasized the need to keep space-related matters, which are critical for India’s scientific and strategic future, above political divisions. Astronaut Shubhansu Shukla arrived back in India on Sunday, August 17th. A welcoming ceremony was held for Shukla and his backup, Prashant Balakrishnan Nair, which included Union Minister Jitendra Singh, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan. The Lok Sabha hosted a special discussion on ‘India’s First Astronaut on the International Space Station – The Important Role of the Space Program for a Developed India by 2047’ to commemorate Shukla’s return.
