Following the death of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, has called for immediate and decisive action, asserting that the issue transcends a single family and impacts “millions of Dalits” nationwide. Kumar was found dead with a gunshot wound at his Chandigarh home on October 7th, an incident being treated as an alleged suicide. A note reportedly left by the officer accused eight senior Haryana police officials, including DGP Shatrujeet Kapur, of caste discrimination and severe harassment. Gandhi urged the arrest of the accused officers and advocated for respect for the victim and justice for Dalit communities. He stated, “This is not a matter of a family’s respect; it is a matter of every Dalit family in the country.” The Haryana government has responded by issuing a high alert across the state, instructing officials to ensure peace and coordination, and to actively engage with local organizations and community leaders to prevent any disruption to communal harmony. The state’s Home Department has circulated a formal directive emphasizing strict vigilance and swift action against any incidents that could disturb public order. Meanwhile, Sh. Om Parkash Singh has been assigned the additional charge of Haryana DGP.
