Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi after former US President Donald Trump asserted that India would stop importing oil from Russia. Gandhi, a prominent voice within the opposition, described PM Modi as fearful of Trump, claiming that the Prime Minister allows the former US President to dictate India’s foreign policy decisions. Gandhi highlighted this by referencing Trump’s announcement that India would halt Russian oil purchases, a move he characterized as Modi being ‘frightened’ and failing to assert India’s stance.
Gandhi elaborated on his concerns, stating on social media that PM Modi consistently sends ‘congratulatory messages’ to Trump despite what he termed ‘repeated snubs.’ He cited past events like the cancellation of the Finance Minister’s trip to the US and skipped high-profile summits as evidence of this perceived deference. Trump’s remarks, made during a White House briefing, stated, “He (Modi) is a great friend of mine. I was not happy that India was buying oil, and he assured me today that they will not be buying oil from Russia; that’s a big step.” This exchange has become a focal point for political debate, with Gandhi questioning the Prime Minister’s independent decision-making capabilities on the international stage.
