The recent floods and heavy rains in Punjab have caused widespread damage, leaving many homeless and destroying crops. In response to this natural disaster, the government is planning to offer significant relief to the affected farmers. Manish Sisodia, the AAP in-charge of Punjab, revealed that farmers will be allowed to remove the sand that has accumulated in their fields due to the floods. During a press conference on September 7th, Sisodia explained that the biggest worry for farmers is the silt that has settled in their fields, making it difficult to prepare for the next planting season. He pointed out that the floods have resulted in significant financial losses for the farmers due to crop damage. Farmers are worried about the upcoming Rabi crop, as the sand deposited by floodwaters makes it challenging to cultivate their land. Sisodia mentioned the state government’s intention to formulate a new policy. While a mining policy is in place, it does not permit mining without permission. He believes a decision is required on this issue. The new policy will enable farmers to extract sand from their fields. Sisodia conveyed the assurance from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann that the government has acknowledged their concerns and will permit sand removal. An official announcement is anticipated within the next few days. Regarding the Prime Minister’s visit on September 9th, Sisodia emphasized the need for substantial relief. He acknowledged the communication between the Chief Minister and central government figures but highlighted the absence of concrete actions from the central government. Sisodia appealed to Prime Minister Modi to authorize the necessary aid for Punjab, requesting the release of 60,000 crore rupees.
