An outbreak of water-borne diseases in Bavdhan Budruk has escalated, with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) reporting a total of 94 cases as of Thursday. Health officials confirmed 51 new infections in the latest update, highlighting the severity of the contamination issue. Initial reports on Tuesday had identified 43 cases concentrated in Gunde Vasti, Patil Nagar, Jadhav Vasti, and the Gaothan area, with common symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea.
Following the alert, the PMC’s health department launched intensive surveillance from Tuesday. This included proactive case identification through hospital visits and community outreach. Between October 8th and 9th alone, 20 patients were treated at the PMC hospital’s OPD, and surveillance teams identified an additional 31 cases within the community.
The demographic breakdown of the 94 confirmed patients shows a predominant impact on adults. The 16-45 age bracket accounts for the largest share with 55 cases. Older adults are also affected, with 20 cases in the 46-60 age group and nine in those over 60. Seven children aged 6-15 and three toddlers under five were also diagnosed.
Dr. Nina Borade, PMC Health Chief, emphasized that the majority of patients are experiencing mild illness and are recovering with outpatient care. She clarified that the reported cases mostly represent symptoms that manifested a few days ago, indicating a past contamination event rather than ongoing acute exposure.
Assuring the public, additional municipal commissioner Pradip Chandren stated that the situation is under control. Efforts by the health and water departments have rectified the contamination problem, and residents are now assured of a safe and reliable water supply. To further investigate and confirm the resolution, the PMC is actively collecting and testing water samples. Twenty-seven samples have been sent for laboratory analysis in the last three days to ensure complete remediation.
