A shocking event unfolded at a government residential school in the Yadgir district of Karnataka, where a Class 9 student gave birth in a school toilet. The incident, which occurred on August 27, prompted an immediate police investigation. The girl was reportedly full-term pregnant due to sexual assault that happened around nine months earlier. Classmates discovered the girl in labor and notified school authorities. The student, initially reluctant to share details, eventually admitted to giving birth. The student and the newborn were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition. Police have registered a POCSO case against a 28-year-old man, based on a complaint from the District Child Protection Officer. Moreover, a case has been registered against the hostel warden, principal, staff nurse, and the victim’s brother for failing to report the pregnancy. The KREIS has taken action, suspending four school employees for negligence. Authorities have committed to a thorough investigation, promising action after a medical report is available and responsibility is determined. They are also planning to take steps to prevent future occurrences by investigating parental concealment, child marriage, and enhancing oversight. A Child Rights Commission member highlighted the negligence of officials, pointing out the need for increased vigilance regarding students’ health and for regular medical check-ups.
