The speed restrictions on the Bhor Ghat section of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway are under review, with a potential increase in the speed limit for heavy vehicles from 40 km/h to 50 km/h. The transport department is seriously considering the proposal due to complaints from heavy vehicle drivers regarding the impracticality of the current limit. This ghat section, a 10 km stretch from Lonavala to Khalapur, presents difficulties for heavy vehicles, especially on the steep slopes. The speed limit for cars remains unchanged at 60 km/h, while the expressway allows for speeds up to 100 km/h for small vehicles and 80 km/h for heavy vehicles in other sections. The transport industry points out that maintaining the current low speed leads to excessive braking, increasing the risk of brake failure. The ITMS has issued numerous e-challans for heavy vehicles, adding to the issue. A joint inspection by relevant authorities has been carried out, and further meetings will discuss the amendment. Drivers have expressed concerns about insufficient warning signs in the ghat section, posing safety hazards. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, despite being a modern six-lane highway, has been the site of many accidents, with Bhor Ghat being a significant area of concern.
