In May 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on his first visit to Manipur following the ethnic violence. Upon arriving in Imphal on a Saturday afternoon, heavy rainfall forced a change of plans. Unable to fly to Churachandpur via helicopter, he decided to travel by road to the Kuki-dominated district. Addressing the public in Churachandpur, PM Modi reassured them of the central government’s support and its commitment to transforming Manipur into a beacon of peace and prosperity. The road journey from Imphal, which usually takes about an hour and a half, was undertaken despite the inclement weather. PM Modi aimed to connect with the people directly, deeming the experience unforgettable. Addressing a gathering in Churachandpur, PM Modi emphasized the transformative impact of peace. He remarked on the recent resolution of conflicts and disputes in the Northeast over the past decade and urged all factions to prioritize peace. The Prime Minister highlighted the progress in Manipur, including the establishment of a medical college in Churachandpur. PM Modi laid the foundation for projects totaling over ₹7,300 crore, aimed at improving the lives of Manipur’s residents, particularly those in the hilly regions. He expressed his gratitude for the warm reception he received during his road trip from Imphal to Churachandpur. During his visit, PM Modi also met with people displaced by the ethnic violence in the state. He heard their issues and concerns, demonstrating the government’s commitment to address their needs.
