Following operations primarily in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the militant group has now set its sights on Lahore, Islamabad, and Karachi. This announcement is explicitly linked to the TTP’s anger over the perceived forced displacement of Afghan Pashtuns, demanding that Pakistani authorities address these grievances.
Pakistan’s military has responded with firm resolve, labeling any attacks originating from Khyber as acts of war. Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif, the army’s chief spokesperson, stated unequivocally that such assaults would trigger a military retaliation. He issued a stern warning to the TTP, urging them not to misjudge the capabilities or commitment of the Pakistani armed forces.
Despite official warnings, the TTP’s actions suggest a significant preparation for escalated hostilities. The group recently communicated its decision to withdraw from Tirah Valley after engaging with tribal elders. This move, disseminated through international press releases, is presented as a humanitarian gesture to safeguard local Pashtun civilians from the impacts of military actions.
The strategic withdrawal from Tirah Valley, a region that has witnessed significant military operations and past civilian casualties, is intended by the TTP to prevent the Pakistani army from using ongoing operations as a pretext to harm the local populace. Further inflaming tensions, a disturbing video emerged depicting a militant defacing national symbols, a clear act of defiance against Pakistan’s leadership and institutions.
