A significant boost to India’s maritime exploration capabilities has arrived with the commissioning of INS Ikshak, the third Survey Vessel Large (SVL), into the Indian Navy. The ceremony, held at Naval Base, Kochi, celebrated the formal induction of this cutting-edge vessel. INS Ikshak is specifically equipped to chart the depths of oceans and previously unknown waters, providing vital guidance for maritime navigation and safety. Embodying the spirit of indigenous innovation, the ship is constructed with around 80% Indian components by value, utilizing exclusively Indian steel from SAIL. This milestone underscores India’s growing strength in shipbuilding and defense manufacturing. The vessel’s advanced hydrographic and oceanographic systems, coupled with helicopter support, offer unparalleled operational flexibility. Beyond its primary surveying role, INS Ikshak can be deployed for crucial Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions and can function as a hospital ship. Demonstrating a commitment to gender equality, it is the first SVL to include dedicated living quarters for female crew members. The induction of INS Ikshak is set to strengthen India’s position in maritime charting, national security, and strategic presence in the vital Indian Ocean.
