Inaugurating a significant lecture series in Bengaluru, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat declared that people of all faiths, including Muslims and Christians, are welcome within the organization. The event, titled ‘100 Years of Sangh Journey: New Horizons,’ commenced the RSS’s centenary celebrations. Bhagwat reflected on the Sangh’s establishment in 1925, emphasizing its founding purpose of fostering social unity and national rebuilding during challenging historical times for India.
He underscored the historical importance of unity among people and the significant role Hindus played in safeguarding India’s cultural heritage. Bhagwat distinguished the RSS from political bodies, describing it as a socio-cultural organization dedicated to societal upliftment and national welfare, operating independently of any political party. He called upon individuals to actively contribute to societal harmony and mutual respect.
When questioned about the RSS’s unregistered status, Bhagwat cited its inception during British colonial rule, stating registration was deemed unnecessary then. He also pointed out that despite facing three bans after India’s independence, judicial interventions consistently upheld the RSS’s legality, validating its existence and constitutional adherence. Bhagwat argued that operating under the Indian Constitution makes formal registration redundant, likening it to the non-registered status of Hindu Dharma itself.
Further elaborating on inclusivity, Bhagwat affirmed that the RSS embraces all who consider themselves children of ‘Bharat Mata.’ He clarified that while the Sangh is part of Hindu society, its ‘shakhas’ are open to members of all religions, including Muslims and Christians, who attend with a sense of shared belonging. The ultimate goal, Bhagwat explained, is to build a robust Hindu society, contributing to a prosperous and self-sufficient India, and disseminating Dharma globally for universal well-being. He suggested that the RSS’s mission would conclude upon achieving this organized and strong societal framework.
