A political dispute has unfolded following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks about Jawaharlal Nehru during a rally in Assam. PM Modi’s assertion was that the wounds of the 1962 Chinese invasion, under Nehru’s leadership, were still unhealed for the people of Assam. This statement drew a sharp response from Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera. Khera posted on X, including excerpts from Jawaharlal Nehru’s address to the nation on November 19, 1962, where Nehru expressed support for Assam and the Northeast. Khera implied that the Prime Minister should familiarize himself with the historical context before making such statements. He accused PM Modi of misleading the public.
The Prime Minister was in the Darrang district of Assam to inaugurate projects worth 6300 crore rupees. During his address, he lauded the Assam BJP government’s efforts and highlighted that the current administration is focused on development and correcting the past mistakes of the Congress government. He also mentioned actions taken to remove illegal land claims and stated that the previous government allowed the encroachment on farmers’ land and places of worship. The BJP government, he said, has started addressing this issue.
PM Modi further claimed that the BJP government has taken strict measures against infiltrators in Assam and has recovered large tracts of land. He emphasized the government’s aim to protect the country from infiltration, stating that the BJP is working effectively towards this goal. He also challenged those who defend infiltrators, demanding they account for their efforts to remove them. He issued a warning that the country would not forgive those who harbor infiltrators.
