Security forces have scored a major victory against drug trafficking with the seizure of methamphetamine tablets worth an astounding Rs 45 crore in Mizoram’s Saitual district. The successful operation was a joint effort between the Assam Rifles and the Mizoram Police, resulting in the apprehension of two suspected drug peddlers.
Intelligence pinpointed a specific vehicle transporting illegal drugs on the Ngopa-Saitual route in the northern part of the district. Responding promptly, a joint team from the Assam Rifles set up a vehicle check post, successfully intercepting the suspicious vehicle. During the subsequent search, a substantial quantity of methamphetamine tablets, weighing around 15 kg, was discovered. The two individuals apprehended during the operation have been identified as Rabizul Haq and Naasiruddin, both hailing from Barpeta in western Assam.
The seized drugs, which are understood to originate from Myanmar, have been confiscated along with the vehicle and the arrested individuals. These have been handed over to the Saitual district Police for comprehensive investigation and the initiation of necessary legal proceedings. This operation highlights the commitment of the Assam Rifles to eradicating drug smuggling in Mizoram.
The region remains a critical transit point for narcotics, with Myanmar sharing a lengthy, often unfenced border. Mizoram, along with other northeastern states, faces significant challenges from this proximity. Methamphetamine, also known as Yaba, is a potent and highly addictive substance, posing a severe threat to public health.
