The Ministry of Home Affairs addressed the recent violence in Ladakh, which followed a hunger strike organized by Sonam Wangchuk and others advocating for the region’s inclusion in the Sixth Schedule and full statehood. The Ministry stated that it is actively engaging with the Apex Body Leh and the Kargil Democratic Alliance to address Ladakh’s concerns. These discussions have led to important decisions.
The Ministry’s statement detailed the progress achieved through the High Powered Committee and its sub-committees. Achievements include increasing reservations for Scheduled Tribes, providing reservation for women, recognizing the Bhoti and Purgi languages, and commencing recruitment for numerous positions. The statement also mentioned that while many leaders are content with the progress, some are attempting to disrupt the dialogue. The government views Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike and reported inflammatory remarks with concern, particularly his references to protests in the Arab Spring and Nepal.
