The President’s rule in Manipur will continue for an additional six months, starting August 13, 2025. The extension was proposed following the initial imposition on February 13, 2025, in the wake of CM N. Biren Singh’s resignation amidst escalating ethnic violence. Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the resolution for the extension.
The Rajya Sabha’s Parliamentary Bulletin reported that the motion, submitted by Amit Shah, received approval. The motion requests parliamentary endorsement to extend the President’s proclamation in Manipur, as outlined in Article 356 of the Constitution, which was initially implemented on February 13, 2025. The extension is slated for six more months, effective from August 13, 2025.
Article 356 (3) of the Constitution allows for the President’s rule to be imposed on the Governor’s recommendation, initially for six months, and it can be extended in six-month increments up to a maximum of three years, contingent upon parliamentary approval.
The ongoing ethnic conflict between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities, which began on May 3, 2023, has led to over 250 deaths and displaced more than 60,000 individuals. Moreover, disruptions in the movement of Meitei people have occurred on the main highways, National Highways 2 and 37, due to their passage through Kuki-Zo-dominated areas since May 2023. The theft of over 6,000 police weapons in the state further exacerbates the situation.
