Manipur has been under President’s rule since February 2025, triggered by the resignation of then-Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 9th. The state has been without an elected government since his departure, leading to the imposition of President’s rule. With the situation ongoing, there is a renewed push to form a government in the state. This effort is evident with various leaders from Manipur arriving in Delhi. The Governor of Manipur is also currently in Delhi. The state has been under President’s rule for more than seven months.
BJP MLAs from Manipur have traveled to Delhi to meet with central leaders, primarily to discuss the formation of a new government. Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and seven other MLAs have arrived in Delhi for these critical discussions.
Prior to his departure for Delhi, N. Biren Singh outlined his agenda: “I intend to engage with central leaders to secure their support in forming a new government and to address the challenges faced by the internally displaced persons. Additionally, I will advocate for the expeditious reopening of vital highways.”
Multiple groups of MLAs are currently in Delhi. Former Minister Sapam Ranjan Singh, Heikham Dingo Singh, and BJP MLA Thongbam Robindro Singh traveled with the former Chief Minister to Delhi on Saturday. In addition, several MLAs from the Meitei community have also arrived in Delhi. These include former ministers Leishangthem Susindro Meitei, Thangjam Arun Kumar, and Lourembam Rameshwor. These two groups have traveled to Delhi separately.
Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, former Minister Govindas Konthoujam, and MLAs Kongkham Robindro, Sapam Kunjakeshwar, Thounaojam Shyamkumar, and Karam Shyam are also expected to travel to Delhi. The recent influx of leaders to Delhi strongly suggests that a new government in Manipur could be formed soon. Notably, Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah recently visited Manipur.
President’s rule was implemented after the CM’s resignation. The violence in Manipur has resulted in hundreds of fatalities. Before the imposition of President’s rule on February 13th, the state had a BJP-led coalition government led by Biren Singh. Following the outbreak of violence on May 3, 2023, N. Biren Singh resigned on February 9, 2025. President’s rule was initiated four days later, and has been in effect for around seven months.
