The Supreme Court’s recent decision concerning stray dogs in Delhi has sparked considerable discussion. Public opinion, including commentary from political figures and social activists, has been critical of the ruling. Maneka Gandhi, a prominent animal rights advocate and BJP leader, has weighed in, asserting that she and others do not condone any form of animal cruelty.
The Supreme Court’s directive mandates the relocation of stray dogs to shelters due to an upsurge in reported dog bite incidents. Between January 2022 and July 2025, approximately 300,000 dog bite cases were documented, the majority involving interactions with stray dogs, which prompted the court’s decision.
Gandhi stated that the mistreatment of animals is not supported by anyone. She acknowledged the public’s view that removing dogs would protect children from bites, aligning with this sentiment. She cautioned that simply removing dogs from Delhi wouldn’t solve the issue, as dogs from adjacent areas like Ghaziabad and Faridabad would quickly move in, given the availability of food resources.
Furthermore, Gandhi addressed the presence of over 50,000 unregulated chicken centers and unlicensed meat vendors in Delhi, factors she sees as contributors to the rising stray dog population. She called for the enforcement of existing regulations on these establishments as a crucial step in controlling the situation.
Gandhi urged the Chief Justice to review the ruling and consider the most effective strategies, reinforcing a shared objective: to reduce the number of stray dogs, prevent dog bites, and promote a peaceful environment for both people and animals.
