Senior advocate Madhav Khurana has been appointed as the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) to manage the legal prosecution of the Red Fort car blast case. The Union Home Ministry’s decision empowers Khurana to represent the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in all trial proceedings and associated legal actions for the next three years. The appointment covers appearances before the NIA special court and the Delhi High Court. The tragic car explosion, which occurred on November 10 near the Red Fort, claimed 15 lives and left numerous people injured. This incident, deemed a ‘terrorist incident’ by the Union Cabinet, involved an alleged suicide bomber, Umar Un Nabi, who detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) inside a car. The NIA has apprehended seven individuals as part of its investigation, which has also involved examining further evidence, including another vehicle associated with the accused. A significant number of witnesses, including survivors, have provided testimony.
