The Kolkata law college student rape case has brought to light a series of disturbing allegations against the prime suspect, Manojit Mishra. Known as ‘Mango,’ Mishra is accused of being a repeat offender with a history of targeting women. His behavior has been described by former classmates as erratic and potentially dangerous. BJP leader Amit Malviya has accused Mishra of having strong ties to the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Mishra’s approach to women often began with the unsettling question, “Tui amay biye korbi?” – “Will you marry me?” He was previously expelled from the college’s Trinamool unit in 2021 for using this tactic on campus. A student stated that the accused and his associates created an environment of fear, particularly for female students. Furthermore, the student noted that the authorities were aware of the issue, but failed to take action.
Further investigation revealed Mishra’s involvement with the TMC. He previously served as the President of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) at South Calcutta Law College, and is currently the General Secretary of TMCP in the South Kolkata district. Despite some TMC leaders distancing themselves, Mishra has been photographed with leading TMC members, including Abhishek Banerjee and Kajari Banerjee. His social media activity documents his participation in numerous TMC events.
Amit Malviya expressed strong criticism of Mishra’s association with the TMC. Malviya condemned the TMC’s explanation of not knowing Mishra’s background as “criminal.” Malviya asserted that Mishra had been accused of attempted murder since 2013 and was the subject of multiple molestation complaints. Despite this, no action was ever taken. Malviya also stated that Mishra was notorious for harassing women and making unsolicited marriage proposals. Additionally, Malviya questioned why Mishra was given a role in a government college in 2023 and pointed out that Mishra had filmed and shared private moments with girls.
The gang-rape took place at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata on June 25. The police have apprehended four individuals, including Mishra, and a special team has been formed to investigate. Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukerjee have been charged with rape. The incident comes after the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case, which has intensified political tensions in West Bengal.
