The medical community and the people of Palamu are mourning the loss of Dr. Surendra Singh, a physician celebrated for his extraordinary compassion and his nominal consultation fee of ₹5. Known as the ‘God of the Poor,’ Dr. Singh provided invaluable medical aid, making healthcare accessible to all, regardless of their financial status. His passing marks the end of an era of selfless service in the region.
Dr. Singh spent many years serving communities in Haidernagar, Ramna, and Nagar Untari. His practice was characterized by a deep sense of empathy, avoiding any form of exploitation. Patients found his doors open at all hours, without any hesitation or ego barriers. This commitment to service earned him immense respect and affection. Even after relocating to Daltonganj, his reputation preceded him. When approached by a private hospital to offer his services, he remained steadfast in his ₹5 fee, only agreeing to ₹50 after significant persuasion from the hospital management, who were concerned about operational costs.
Originating from a humble background in Murma village, Dr. Singh’s early life experiences instilled in him a profound understanding of poverty and hardship. His educational pursuits were arduous, further highlighting his determination. He valued human connections immensely and never considered charging his own community. His unassuming demeanor and simple way of life made it hard to believe he was a doctor. Dr. Surendra Singh’s life exemplified the true meaning of service, solidifying his place as a revered figure whose legacy will continue to inspire.
