The Palamu district bids a sorrowful farewell to Dr. Surendra Singh, a physician whose kindness and affordability earned him the title ‘God of the Poor.’ His passing marks the end of an era defined by unparalleled service to the community. Dr. Singh was not driven by financial gain; he was a healer in the truest sense, never exploiting patients with unnecessary tests or exorbitant charges. His commitment was unwavering, with his clinic accessible around the clock, free from any restrictions or ego. For years, he practiced in Haidernagar, charging a mere ₹5 for consultations. It was common for him to treat over 100 patients daily, with a significant number receiving care at no cost. He could not fathom charging his rural patients, often turning away money offered by those trying to pay. Similar dedication was witnessed during his service in Ramna and Nagar Untari. When he relocated to Daltonganj, patients still sought his advice. A local private hospital invited him to practice, but he stood firm on his ₹5 fee. The hospital administration, concerned about sustainability, eventually agreed to a ₹50 fee under pressure, yet Dr. Singh’s heart remained with the common person. Hailing from a simple background in Murma village, Dr. Singh intimately understood the hardships faced by the poor, having overcome educational challenges himself. He placed immense value on personal connections, never considering fees from his acquaintances. His unpretentious lifestyle reflected his grounded nature. Dr. Surendra Singh’s life serves as a powerful reminder of the profound impact a dedicated and compassionate physician can have, truly living up to the divine reputation of healers.
