Jharkhand’s state government is facing accusations of manufacturing new crimes to obscure ongoing illegal activities. Babulal Marandi, the BJP state president and leader of the opposition, asserted that the government and its systems have developed a habit of concocting offenses to cover up the truth. Revelations from the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) recent investigation into the Dhanbad coal empire have brought alarming facts to light. The most concerning aspect, according to Marandi, is the alleged directive from “top police officials”—reportedly profiting from coal smuggling—to “permanently eliminate” key operatives within the coal mafia. These operatives are allegedly being targeted precisely because they are cooperating with the ED’s inquiries. Marandi cautioned that the state has witnessed a disturbing pattern where “evidence is encountered” instead of criminals being brought to justice. He alluded to a previous DGP who faced accusations of contract killings and unparalleled corruption, claims even made by members of the ruling party. He stressed the need for the ED to remain exceptionally vigilant, as the system allegedly favors those who bury the truth. Marandi concluded that when power, bureaucracy, and organized crime become intertwined, the perversion of justice is an almost inevitable outcome.
