The Jharkhand state government faces accusations of orchestrating new criminal activities as a smokescreen to obscure prevailing lawlessness. Babulal Marandi, the State President of the BJP and Leader of the Opposition, asserted that the administration and its associated systems have adopted a pattern of manufacturing new crimes to hide existing ones across Jharkhand. Recent raids by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into the illicit coal trade in Dhanbad have brought to light deeply concerning evidence. More disturbingly, Marandi claims that certain high-ranking police officers, allegedly benefiting financially from the coal black market, have issued directives for the ‘permanent elimination’ of key operatives within the coal mafia. This alleged plot is reportedly designed to prevent individuals under ED scrutiny from revealing sensitive information. The opposition leader pointed out that the strategy of ‘encountering evidence’ in the name of crime suppression has a history in the state. He recalled instances of a former Director General of Police facing accusations, even from within the ruling coalition, of executing contract killings and setting unprecedented corruption benchmarks. Marandi advised the ED to proceed with heightened vigilance, highlighting a system where truth-tellers are suppressed, and those who conceal facts wield power. He concluded that when political power, law enforcement, and organized crime converge, the subversion of justice is all but assured.
