A powerful wave of spirituality swept through the Kolhan region as thousands of devotees participated in sacred river rituals on Kartik Purnima. The banks of the Swarnarekha, Kharkai, and Karoi rivers were teeming with pilgrims from early morning, seeking divine blessings. Devotees embraced the chill of the pre-dawn waters to purify themselves and offer prayers to Hindu deities.
Jamdshedpur’s Domuhani, the confluence of the Swarnarekha and Kharkai, saw an overwhelming number of devotees. Rituals commenced with the Brahma Muhurta, featuring long queues for the holy bath. Participants engaged in worship, lit lamps, and made offerings, including traditional donations of grains, clothing, and fruits, after their immersion. This sacred bath is believed to cleanse individuals of all sins and grant immense spiritual merit.
Similar scenes unfolded in West Singhbhum, where the Karoi river ghats in Gua Bazar became a focal point for devotees. From 3 AM onwards, a continuous stream of people performed ablutions and offered prayers. A poignant ritual involved women floating small, handcrafted boats with lamps, symbolizing prayers for global peace and prosperity. Post-dip, devotees visited the Shiva temple, participating in queues to offer sacred items to the deity.
The significance of Kartik Purnima is deeply rooted in Hindu scriptures, marking the end of Kartik month, a period of heightened spiritual activity. It is believed that Lord Vishnu awakens from his cosmic sleep during this time, making all religious observances particularly potent. Acts of charity and devotion performed are thought to usher in good fortune and tranquility.
This Purnima, also referred to as Tripurari Purnima, celebrates a key event in Hindu mythology – Lord Shiva’s vanquishing of the demon Tripurasura. This victory over evil is a central theme of the day’s celebrations.
To ensure smooth and safe celebrations, administrative bodies coordinated comprehensive arrangements. Security personnel and volunteers were deployed to manage crowds, direct traffic, and maintain sanitary conditions. Several community groups contributed by distributing prasad, providing drinking water, and offering medical assistance.
