Babulal Marandi, the BJP’s state chief and Leader of Opposition in Jharkhand, has accused the ruling administration of fabricating new criminal acts to obscure the reality of ongoing offenses. He asserted that creating ‘new crimes’ to hide existing ones has become a habitual practice of the government and the state’s operational framework. Recent investigations by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into the illicit coal trade in Dhanbad have brought to light startling evidence. More disturbingly, information indicates that some senior police officers, allegedly profiting from the ‘black economy’ of coal, have given directives to eliminate their own ground-level informants to prevent any leaks. Concerns are mounting that individuals under ED scrutiny are being targeted for assassination, a desperate measure to silence them and prevent the revelation of truth. Marandi reminisced about similar tactics in the past where ‘encounters’ were allegedly orchestrated to eliminate evidence rather than apprehend criminals. He referenced a past state DGP who faced accusations of involvement in contract killings and unprecedented corruption, with even ruling party members acknowledging his corrupt legacy. The opposition leader advised the ED to be highly vigilant, noting that in Jharkhand, power often lies with those who bury the truth, not those who expose it. He warned that when political power, administrative systems, and criminal syndicates converge, the suppression of justice becomes a mere formality.
