The case of a husband, wife, and the wife’s boyfriend has sparked considerable attention in Saraikela, Jharkhand. A village panchayat made the unusual decision of allowing a woman to leave her husband and live with her boyfriend, right in front of her husband. The boyfriend, however, was subjected to a fine. What was more astonishing was the fact that the police were not permitted to interfere in the matter. This incident occurred in Palashdih village, under the jurisdiction of the RIT police station.
Reportedly, the boyfriend and another man were captured by villagers when they went to meet the married woman. A panchayat was subsequently convened. The panchayat then decreed that the woman should be sent with her lover, with the husband present. The villagers strongly resisted any police intervention.
A young man from Chilgu Panchayat, Chandil, along with his friend, drove to Palashdih, Sitrampur, on Monday night to meet his girlfriend. Villagers surrounded them while they were taking the woman in the car. The boyfriend and his friend were pulled out of the car and beaten. After this, the woman and the two men were held captive.
Upon receiving information, SDPO Sameer Kumar Savaiya and RIT police station in-charge Vinay Kumar Singh, along with their teams, arrived at the scene. They tried to reason with the villagers, but the villagers insisted that it was a social issue and opposed police involvement. The police had to withdraw because of the vehement opposition. However, the police remained at the location to prevent any adverse incidents.
In accordance with social traditions, a meeting of the village assembly was held. After the meeting, all parties left with mutual agreement. The panchayats of the woman’s in-laws, her parents, and her boyfriend’s village sat together. The decision made by the panchayat, which went on from morning till evening, startled the woman’s husband. The lover was fined one lakh while the woman was allowed to go with her lover. The woman was also divorced there and sent with her lover. This case has now become a widespread topic of discussion.
