The healthcare system in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, is facing scrutiny after a government hospital allegedly misdiagnosed a pregnant woman, denying her admission and claiming her baby had died. This led to the woman seeking care at a private hospital, where she delivered a healthy baby.
Vinod Sav reported that he brought his wife, Manisha Devi, to the Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College & Hospital after a 120-kilometer journey. Hospital staff, however, refused admission, stating concerns about her hemoglobin levels and claiming the fetus was deceased.
The couple then opted for a private hospital in the district. Here, Manisha successfully gave birth to a healthy child. Vinod Sav acknowledged the private hospital’s doctors for ensuring a safe delivery.
Following the incident, Hazaribagh’s Deputy Commissioner, Shashi Prakash Singh, ordered a probe into the incident. He instructed the Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College & Hospital’s superintendent to establish a committee to investigate. ‘Government hospitals are meant to offer affordable, quality care, yet treatment was denied in this instance,’ Singh commented. ‘I have instructed the hospital administration to launch an investigation.’
Dr. Praveen Kumar, the private hospital’s owner, confirmed that after admission, Manisha underwent comprehensive tests, all of which were positive. He confirmed that the mother and newborn were both in good health.
