A major brown sugar operation has been dismantled in Ranchi, Jharkhand, with investigations revealing links to Sasaram, Bihar. Police action involved an SIT that led to the arrest of drug traffickers in Bihar, exposing an interstate network. At the helm of this illicit enterprise was Mohini Sharma, also known as Mohini Devi, a 65-year-old woman, identified as the key figure. Following her lead, four other individuals implicated in the brown sugar trade were taken into custody. Those arrested included Mohini Sharma (65), Sumit Tirkey (22), Paras Kumar (25), Mohammad Ismail (29), and a minor. DSP Prakash Soy from the Kotwali police detailed how Ranchi’s SSP, Chandan Sinha, received a tip-off regarding Mohini Devi’s alleged brown sugar sales and network operations from her rented premises. A police team, spearheaded by the Kotwali DSP, conducted a raid on Mohini Sharma’s residence, recovering around 50 packets of brown sugar and a smartphone. The recent arrests are part of an ongoing crackdown. Prior to this, Ranchi police had apprehended Ruby Devi, also known as ‘Bhabhi Ji,’ from Sasaram, Bihar, in June. Investigations revealed that Ruby Devi’s family was deeply involved in drug trafficking, with multiple cases lodged against her at the Sukhdevnagar police station in Ranchi. The arrest of the 65-year-old, nicknamed ‘Dadi Amma,’ signifies another significant step in combating the brown sugar trade.
