Hemant Soren, born on August 10, 1975, in Nemra village of Ramgarh district, Jharkhand, has etched his name in the annals of Jharkhand politics. The son of Dishom Guru Shibu Soren and Rupi Soren, he stands out as the only politician to have served as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand four times, shaping his political image through dedicated service.
As Hemant Soren turned 50 on August 10, 2025, he garnered birthday wishes from across the political spectrum. Celebrations and well wishes came from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, other national leaders, chief ministers of other states, and leaders from Jharkhand’s political parties, all recognizing his leadership and wishing him a prosperous future.
A few days before his milestone birthday, on August 4, 2025, Hemant Soren faced personal loss with the passing of his father, Dishom Guru Shibu Soren, a respected figure in Jharkhand. Following his father’s death, Hemant honored his memory with the appropriate last rites and observed traditional customs at his ancestral village in Ramgarh.
Initially, Hemant harbored ambitions of becoming an engineer. After completing his intermediate studies, he secured admission to Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (BIT Mesra), Ranchi. However, destiny steered him toward a career in politics before he could complete his engineering degree.
His foray into politics was spurred by his father’s and mother’s electoral defeats in 1998 and 1999, which weakened the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. Hemant stepped up to revitalize the party, focusing on strengthening it in the Santhal Pargana region. This groundwork eventually helped his father, Shibu Soren, win the Dumka Lok Sabha seat in 2002, 2004 and 2009.
Hemant’s own political journey began in 2005 when he contested the Dumka Assembly seat but lost to Stephen Marandi. Undeterred, he remained focused on ground-level activities, culminating in his election as a Rajya Sabha MP in 2009.
Later in 2009, he re-entered the Assembly elections from the Dumka seat, securing his first victory as an MLA and subsequently resigning from the Rajya Sabha.
In 2010, Hemant Soren became the Deputy CM under the then-Chief Minister Arjun Munda. His first term as Chief Minister of Jharkhand started in 2013. He took oath for the second time on December 29, 2019. Legal challenges arose on December 31, 2023, when the Enforcement Directorate arrested Hemant Soren in a land scam case, leading to imprisonment. Following his release, he took oath as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand for the third time on July 4, 2024.
In the November 2024 Assembly elections, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, under his guidance, won 34 seats. The ruling coalition led by him secured a total of 56 seats, leading to a landslide victory. On November 28, 2024, he was sworn in for the fourth time as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand.
On April 15, 2025, at the 13th Central General Convention of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Hemant Soren was elected as the party’s central president, succeeding his father, Dishom Guru Shibu Soren. Hemant now shoulders the weighty responsibility of preserving his father’s political legacy, his vision, and the aspirations of Jharkhand’s 35 million citizens.
