The Saranda region is reeling from the ongoing deaths of elephants, each loss deeply affecting the local communities. The death of a young, injured elephant on Thursday has led to widespread mourning, with villagers refraining from cooking. This latest tragedy is the third instance of elephant deaths, amplifying the sorrow in the area.
Saranda, known for its elephant population, is now a site of repeated loss. On Thursday, an elephant died in Serengsia village, followed by the death of a wounded young elephant in Manoharpur during treatment. This unfortunate event added to the already existing grief.
The young elephant had been critically wounded in a recent IED explosion.
With the third elephant death, the villagers’ patience is wearing thin. In Serengsia and Manoharpur, residents did not light their cooking fires and observed a day of fasting. Tears flowed freely, and hearts were filled with sorrow. The villagers are united in their plea: “May God protect these innocent creatures from human cruelty.”
Furthermore, the villagers are expressing their concerns and raising questions about the response of the forest department and administrative authorities.
