A boat carrying passengers capsized in the Ganges River in Jharkhand’s Sahebganj district, resulting in one death and three people missing. 27 passengers were able to swim to safety after the boat overturned near Gadai Diyara.
The incident involved 17 tribal youths who had embarked on a rat-catching expedition. They crossed the Ganges at Maharajpur Ghat and were joined by local residents on their return journey. The overloaded boat became unstable in the strong currents and capsized. Brave attempts were made by some youths to rescue those in danger, but one victim was recovered deceased. The search continues for the three missing individuals with the help of local divers and authorities.
This tragedy underscores a concerning pattern of accidents in the Sahebganj district. A similar incident occurred in December 2022 at Garam Ghat, where a cargo vessel carrying three truck tires capsized after a tire burst. A truck driver remains missing from that incident.
