The Shravani Mela is fast approaching, and the devotion surrounding it is palpable. While many are familiar with the Kanwar Yatra, few are aware of the ‘Dak Bam’ devotees. These individuals undertake an incredible feat of endurance, walking a staggering 105 kilometers from Sultanganj to Deoghar in a mere 24 hours, without any breaks. This article sheds light on the dedication and unique practices of the Dak Bam.
Defining the Dak Bam
A Dak Bam is a Kanwariya who completes the 105 km Kanwar Yatra from Sultanganj to Deoghar within 24 hours non-stop. This journey is extraordinarily challenging, requiring relentless walking or running. Rest is strictly prohibited. This practice necessitates exceptional physical stamina and resolute commitment. It is a cherished tradition, particularly in the regions of Purvanchal, Bihar, and Jharkhand.
Privileges of Dak Bam
Dak Bam Kanwariyas are granted special privileges at Baba Dham. They are provided with a dedicated queue for Jalabhishek and receive priority in performing the ritual. Other devotees make way for them to ensure their uninterrupted journey to the Shivling. If a Dak Bam pauses during their journey, it is considered incomplete.
