The Jharkhand government is facing strong allegations of fabricating new criminal incidents to mask the true extent of ongoing criminal enterprises. Babu Lal Marandi, the state BJP chief and opposition leader, has accused the ruling administration and its associated systems of developing a disturbing pattern of manufacturing crimes to hide deeper issues. The recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids targeting the coal mafia in Dhanbad have brought to light significant incriminating evidence. The most concerning aspect highlighted is the alleged directive from influential police officers, enriched by the black money generated from coal smuggling, to silence and permanently ‘eliminate’ their own operatives. This is reportedly a deliberate strategy to prevent witnesses from cooperating with the ED. There are strong indications that the very individuals undergoing questioning by the ED are being targeted for elimination to prevent the disclosure of vital truths. This is reminiscent of past instances where ‘evidence destruction’ encounters were staged under the guise of law enforcement operations. The state has previously witnessed a DGP whose tenure was marred by accusations of contract killings and unparalleled corruption, claims even voiced by members of the ruling party. The ED needs to be exceptionally vigilant, as the prevailing environment favors those who suppress facts over those who reveal them. When political power, institutional mechanisms, and organized crime converge, the perversion of justice becomes a foregone conclusion.
