A significant portion of the high-level bridge on the Banai River, situated on the Khunti-Simdega main road near Pelol village, has collapsed. This has resulted in a complete halt to traffic on this essential route. The bridge is a vital link connecting Ranchi to Khunti, Simdega, and further to Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and other states. It also provides the most direct access to Baba Amreshwar Dham. The bridge’s condition had been deteriorating for several days, as reported by locals, yet it continued to be used by heavy vehicles. The collapse occurred on Thursday morning after the bridge’s structure was compromised following heavy rainfall. A truck became stuck during the collapse, however, there were no major casualties. Traffic has been completely disrupted, and alternative routes are being used to manage transportation. Residents stated that the bridge was constructed approximately a decade ago, with construction quality being a concern, leading to its collapse despite costing crores of rupees. The collapse is attributed to a lack of timely maintenance. This route is used daily by numerous vehicles traveling to and from Khunti, Simdega, and nearby villages. People are now facing considerable inconvenience using the alternative routes. This bridge serves as a vital connection from Ranchi to Khunti, Simdega and other regions including Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
