In a landmark achievement, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) made history by successfully completing an all-women expedition to Mount Nun (7,135 m) in the Nun-Kun mountain range, Kargil. This represents a first for the ITBP in its mountaineering endeavors. The expedition, a testament to the force’s commitment to excellence in high-altitude operations, was initiated from ITBP headquarters in New Delhi on July 3, 2025, under the guidance of Rahul Rasgotra, IPS, Director General of ITBP. The team spent approximately one month in Leh, Ladakh, undergoing intensive training that included acclimatization and technical preparation. On August 13, 2025, at 09:25 AM, the first rope team, comprising seven mountaineers and three technical members, summited Mount Nun after commencing their ascent from the summit camp on August 12. The second rope team, consisting of seven mountaineers and two technical members, reached the summit on August 14, 2025, at 08:50 AM, thereby accomplishing this historic feat. Mount Nun, a formidable peak in Jammu and Kashmir, presents a challenging climb due to its demanding mixed ice-rock terrain, treacherous ridges, treacherous glaciers, steep icy faces, and unpredictable weather conditions. It is a recognized training ground for expeditions to 8,000-meter peaks, requiring exceptional stamina, technical expertise, and strategic planning. This historic all-women expedition further solidifies the ITBP’s esteemed mountaineering record. The ITBP has previously scaled six of the fourteen 8,000-meter peaks globally, including Mount Everest and Mount Kanchenjunga, and has achieved five successful ascents of Mount Everest. The Mount Nun expedition exemplifies the force’s commitment to excellence, empowerment, leadership, and operational effectiveness in high-altitude environments.
