Amidst claims by President Donald Trump that India has committed to cutting back on Russian oil imports, New Delhi has officially refuted any such telephonic conversation or agreement. Trump reiterated his assertion that Prime Minister Modi agreed to cease Russian oil purchases, adding that India could face ‘massive tariffs’ if it doesn’t comply.
During a press briefing, India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson explicitly stated that there had been no discussion between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump on energy issues. Trump, however, maintained his position, suggesting India has already begun to ‘de-escalate’ its purchases from Russia. The US President’s comments come as the administration previously levied a significant tariff on Indian oil imports while distinguishing its stance on China’s energy trade with Russia.
