The recent SCO platform meeting conveyed a clear message: India could be the key to a ceasefire and peace in Ukraine. European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen discussed the situation with PM Modi via phone during a meeting in Paris.
The EU acknowledged India’s critical role in ending the war and fostering peace in a social media post, welcoming India’s continued support for Ukraine. The EU also warned of the global consequences of the war, including economic instability. Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s commitment to a peaceful resolution.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha met with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, where they discussed ways to end the conflict and establish lasting peace.
PM Modi has spoken with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Zelensky to discuss ending the conflict. The issue was also addressed during a recent meeting between PM Modi and Putin at the SCO meeting in China.
India has not condemned Russia’s actions publicly, instead calling for direct talks between Russia and Ukraine. PM Modi has emphasized that a solution cannot be found on the battlefield.
Despite Western pressure, India has maintained ties with Russia. While occasionally critical of Putin, PM Modi has generally avoided aggressive rhetoric. India has carefully maintained its strategic partnership with Russia.
PM Modi has engaged in peace efforts and met with the Ukrainian President. India has increased imports of discounted Russian oil and provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine, including medical supplies and equipment.
