In a significant development, the Gauhati High Court has granted bail to Aminul Islam, an MLA from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), who has spent more than seven months in custody. The court’s division bench, headed by Justices Kalyan Rai Surana and Suresh Majumdar, nullified the detention order issued under the National Security Act (NSA). This ruling means Islam, representing the Dhing constituency, will be released shortly, pending administrative procedures. His arrest on April 14 stemmed from alleged comments connecting recent terror incidents, including the Pahalgam and Pulwama attacks, to a supposed governmental cover-up. These remarks sparked widespread outrage, with critics labeling them as divisive and detrimental to national security. A video circulating on social media, allegedly featuring Islam making controversial statements and appearing to support the terrorists, was instrumental in the police’s decision to detain him under the NSA. The Nagaon Superintendent of Police had affirmed the video’s role in the detention. The AIUDF had previously stated that Islam’s comments were made in a personal capacity and were inappropriate, especially during a period of national grief. The High Court’s intervention now brings his prolonged detention to an end.
