Following a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has voiced its opposition to the broadcasting of the upcoming India-Pakistan cricket match in the 2025 Asia Cup. The match, set to take place on September 14th, will be the first instance of the two teams playing since the attack. FWICE, representing a large segment of film professionals, including technicians and artists, sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sony TV, requesting they halt the broadcast. The organization contends that airing the match would be insensitive, particularly given the recent events in Pahalgam and the sacrifices of Indian soldiers in previous attacks, such as the Pulwama incident in 2019. FWICE’s letter highlighted the tragic loss of 40 soldiers in Pulwama and the 26 lives lost in Pahalgam. They argue that broadcasting the match would appear to disregard the nation’s emotional connection to these events. The organization also referenced the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s request to the Indian media and entertainment industry to avoid cooperation with Pakistan or its artists. FWICE’s leader, Ashok Joy, underscored the importance of national interests and citizens’ dignity above entertainment or commercial gains and appealed to Sony TV to act with respect for national sentiments.
