The Maharashtra government’s Ladki Bahin Yojana, designed to support women, has been rocked by a scandal involving widespread fraud. An audit has revealed that over 14,000 men exploited the online registration system to illegally receive benefits, resulting in the disbursement of Rs 21.44 crore. The scheme, which launched in August 2024, was found to have significant irregularities, leading to the suspension of benefits for a large number of beneficiaries. NCP leader Supriya Sule has called for a CBI inquiry to investigate the extent of the fraud and identify those responsible for the misuse of the scheme. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar stated that the government would recover the misused funds and take strict action against those involved. The investigation also identified cases of women employed in government or private sectors improperly receiving benefits, prompting their removal from the beneficiary list. The Women and Child Development Department is currently reviewing the situation.
