In an effort to reduce the prevalence of vehicles exceeding 20 years of age, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has implemented substantial increases in registration renewal fees. Light motor vehicles (LMVs) older than two decades will now incur a renewal fee of Rs 10,000, up from Rs 5,000. Motorcycle renewals will cost Rs 2,000, doubling the previous fee of Rs 1,000. The renewal fee for three-wheelers and quadricycles has also risen, from Rs 3,500 to Rs 5,000. Imported vehicles are subject to considerably higher fees. Renewing imported vehicles with two or three wheels will cost Rs 20,000, while those with four or more wheels will be charged Rs 80,000. These changes were finalized on August 21, based on proposals released in February. The ministry previously adjusted these fees in October 2021. A recent Supreme Court ruling prevented strict measures against older diesel (10 years) and petrol (15 years) vehicles in Delhi-NCR, based on a Delhi government appeal.
