Six Bengali migrant workers, arrested in Delhi’s Rohini area on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals, are now imprisoned in Bangladesh. The workers were initially detained in Delhi and later deported, only to be arrested again in Bangladesh on suspicion of illegal entry. Their families are urging the state government to intervene and bring them back home.
The families claim that the workers were detained by Bangladeshi police in Chapai Nawabganj, Bangladesh, on suspicion of infiltration. They were subsequently brought before a Bangladeshi court and are currently in jail. Among those detained is Sonali Khatun, who was living in Rohini Sector 26, Delhi, with her husband, Danish Sheikh, and their five-year-old son, Sabir Sheikh. Sonali, who is eight months pregnant, was arrested by the Delhi Police on June 17. All the detained workers are from Birbhum, Bengal.
On June 26th, they were deported to Bangladesh. Sweety Bibi and her two sons, residents of Dhitra village under Murarai police station, were also arrested by Delhi Police and sent to Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi police arrested them in Nawabganj, Bangladesh, on suspicion of illegal entry, and charges were filed under the Passport-Foreign Act.
