Three arrests have been made following the gang-rape of a medical student from Odisha in Durgapur, West Bengal. The victim, a second-year MBBS student, was attacked near her college, leading to immediate police action. A case has been formally registered against the arrested individuals, encompassing charges of gang-rape and criminal conspiracy.
The harrowing incident unfolded on Friday night when the 23-year-old student, who resides in Jaleswar, Odisha, and studies at a local medical college in Durgapur, was allegedly attacked. She had reportedly stepped out for a meal with a male acquaintance. Investigators state that a group of men approached them near the college entrance, forcibly took the woman to a nearby wooded area, and assaulted her before absconding. The identities of the three individuals now in custody remain confidential.
In response to the widespread outrage, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has actively engaged with the authorities. The NCW chairperson has formally requested West Bengal’s Director General of Police to expedite the arrest of all perpetrators, ensure a transparent investigation, and provide necessary medical and psychological care to the survivor. Furthermore, an NCW representative is slated to visit Durgapur to meet with the victim and scrutinize the ongoing police efforts, seeking a detailed ‘Action Taken’ report within a short timeframe.
Law enforcement officials have conveyed that the victim is undergoing treatment and that her family is being supported. They have also urged the public to refrain from spreading unconfirmed details about the case. The police department emphasized its dedication to combating crimes against women and promised to pursue all necessary legal avenues to deliver justice to the victim.
