Following reports of child fatalities linked to potentially contaminated cough syrups, the Tamil Nadu government has moved to ban ColdRif cough syrup. The decision aims to address concerns stemming from the deaths of children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Starting October 1st, the sale of the cough syrup has been banned across the state. The Food Safety and Drug Administration Department confirmed the prohibition. Inspections were carried out at the manufacturing facility of the city-based firm in Sunguvarchathram, and samples have been obtained for thorough analysis. The collected samples will be sent to government laboratories for testing to check for the presence of Diethylene Glycol. The Union Ministry has also issued an advisory, advising against the prescription of cough and cold medications to children under two years old, amidst rising concerns of potential contamination.
