A significant case of online fraud has surfaced in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, involving a woman who was defrauded of ₹18 lakh after being promised marriage. The perpetrator, who claimed to be from the UK, initiated contact through a Bharat Matrimony site. The victim, upon discovering the deceit, filed a complaint at the local police station.
The incident unfolded in the Khamhardih police station area. The 38-year-old complainant from Bhawna Nagar, Khamhardih, revealed in her report that she had created a profile on a matrimonial website. Her interaction with Dr. Shiva Kumar, also known as Surendra, began on May 19, 2025. Shiva presented himself as a UK national and proposed marriage, leading to frequent communication.
The accused then expressed his desire to visit Raipur. He later contacted her on May 22, claiming to be held by customs officials at Delhi airport and in need of ₹18 lakh to be released. The woman, believing his story, transferred the requested amount across different accounts.
Following the transaction, the accused’s phone was switched off. The woman’s attempts to contact Shiva Kumar were unsuccessful. She subsequently lodged a formal complaint with the police, feeling cheated. The Khamhardih police station has registered a case under BNS 318-4 and is currently searching for the accused.
