The Raipur police department has taken a significant step to address the issue of road accident fatalities involving two-wheeler riders, mandating that all showrooms include a helmet with the sale of every new motorcycle. The order, issued by SSP Dr. Lal Umed Singh, highlights the critical need to protect riders. The police statistics reveal that more than 20,495 challans were issued in the past seven months to individuals riding without helmets. Despite public awareness campaigns and helmet distribution drives, a significant number of people continue to ignore essential safety protocols. This has led to 190 deaths within the last seven months due to road accidents. According to Section 138 of the Motor Vehicles Act of 1989, supplying a helmet with each two-wheeler is mandatory for sellers, a rule that many showrooms have been flouting. The SSP’s directive specifies that those who do not follow the rule will face repercussions under Motor Vehicle Rules 33-44, which includes the potential suspension or cancellation of their business certificates. The initiative is intended to educate the public on the importance of helmets and reduce fatalities in accidents.
