A purported theft at a businessman’s residence in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, has been exposed as a hoax. The initial report claimed that unidentified individuals had entered the businessman’s apartment, rendered him unconscious, tied him up, and stolen 86 kg of silver jewelry worth 1.29 crore rupees. The businessman had also alleged that the thieves took the DVR from the CCTV cameras, but the entire account has been proven false.
The incident took place in the Sadar Bazaar area under the jurisdiction of the City Kotwali police station. The businessman, identified as Rahul Goyal, confessed during police interrogation that his initial statement was fabricated. He admitted to losing a significant sum of money in online gambling. Goyal worked as a broker in the silver trade and hailed from Agra, Uttar Pradesh. He would receive silver orders from Agra, facilitate their supply, and earn a commission for his services. The companies he worked with trusted him and provided him with silver on credit.
To cover his gambling debts, Goyal concocted a false narrative to avoid paying for the company’s silver and to recover his losses. He filed a false FIR, claiming to be from Aligarh and owning a company named Shiva Traders in Raipur. He presented himself as a CFA for the company, bringing silver jewelry to Raipur to sell to other businesses.
In the FIR, he claimed to receive a commission of 50 rupees for each piece of silver jewelry sold. He had brought 200 kg of silver to Raipur for Diwali. He returned 100 kg to Agra and sold 14 kg. He alleged that 86 kg of silver remained. He stated that on Friday night, after eating dinner, he went to sleep. Around 3 am, someone knocked on his door. He opened it and found two masked individuals. One pointed a gun at him, while the other attacked him with a knife and covered his mouth. He then lost consciousness.
He regained consciousness the next day at 10 am to find his hands and feet tied with rope. He managed to free himself and exit the apartment. He claimed that 86 kg of silver jewelry had been stolen from his house and that the thieves had also taken the DVR.
