In Raipur, Chhattisgarh, a professor at the Government Engineering College was ensnared in a cyber scam, ultimately losing 88 lakh rupees to digital fraudsters. The criminals, leveraging the fear of human trafficking and money laundering accusations, coerced the professor into transferring significant sums over a 26-day period. The professor has filed a complaint with the police, and an investigation is underway.
The police explained that cybercriminals often employ deceptive calls and video calls to frighten victims. The victim, 62-year-old Santosh Karmakar, a professor residing in Purani Basti, received fraudulent calls on June 20th. The perpetrators, pretending to be Bangalore police officers, falsely alleged misuse of his Aadhaar card, and threatened him with digital arrest, leading to the theft of 88 lakh rupees from his accounts. The police had earlier suspected fraudulent transactions, but the professor initially denied being a victim of cybercrime.
