In a significant move, the State GST Department of Chhattisgarh conducted coordinated raids across various cities, including Raipur, Bilaspur, Korba, Durg, Raigarh, and Jagdalpur. The raids targeted businesses dealing in gutkha, clothing, transport, footwear, and dry fruits. A total of 25 locations were targeted.
The raids led to immediate disarray at several sites. Investigations showed that the firms had reported significant turnovers but had either underpaid or completely avoided paying taxes. Several firms were found to be involved in bogus billing and fraudulent claiming of input tax credits.
TL Dhruv, the State GST Special Commissioner, announced that the department would take strict action against tax evaders. Legal proceedings, along with substantial penalties, are being prepared. Notices have been issued to all firm operators after confirming tax evasion of around ₹10 crore.
Furthermore, it was revealed during the raids that some businesses lacked proper accounting software and transaction records, relying instead on unofficial bills and fabricated documents to conduct their operations.
