Under the Good Governance policy of the Chhattisgarh government, led by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, the Commercial Tax (GST) Department has seen a significant reshuffle. This move aims to enhance transparency, impartiality, and public service delivery across all government departments. The recent transfers, the largest in years, are a stark contrast to the limited movements seen in the past two-three years. Prior to this, only a small number of officers (around 10-15) were transferred. A significant number of GST department officials had been stationed at the same postings for extended periods, with some serving in the same location for up to 18 years. This situation was seen as detrimental to the efficiency and integrity of tax collection. Out of 35 sanctioned posts for State Tax Deputy Commissioners, 17 officers received new postings following promotions. Among the remaining Deputy Commissioners, several had lengthy tenures in Raipur, ranging from 4 to 10 years. Additionally, a number of Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners had been serving in their home districts for five years. Furthermore, many State Tax Officers and Inspectors had also been stationed in the same locations for several years. This prolonged presence in the same areas, especially in a tax collection department, raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Commercial Tax Minister Shri O P Chaudhary emphasized the government’s commitment to improving tax administration. The government has taken steps to decentralize and strengthen tax administration, including establishing circles in new districts and deploying officers. The government has also ensured that transfers consider human sensitivities, ensuring that couples are posted in the same district and that female officers are reassigned to nearby locations whenever possible. The government will continue to strengthen an honest, transparent, and dedicated work culture.
